This is a photo of the ceiling decor in the courtyard of a small palace (Il Palazzo Vecchio, or the old palace) in Florence. The Medici family used to live here. They were very powerful in Florence before Italy was unified. Some of them took the title grand duke, but we think they were really more like kings. Cosimo dei Medici's wife, a Spanish princess, said the Palazzo Vecchio wasn't good enough to raise her children in and they moved to the fantastic Pitti Palace across the river. One last tidbit: the David used to stand in front of Palazzo Vecchio right outside this courtyard. We saw him but couldn't take pictures. He was truly impressive!!
