Madrid

We made it to Madrid late last night and our hotel is beautiful! We are located near the Puerta del Sol, which we walked through this morning. There are some interesting demonstrations going on there... We seem to inadvertently end up at protests fairly often (we stumbled onto an anti-Mafia protest in Rome). We also saw the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace this morning. Now we are headed for a siesta, then the Parque del Retiro, tapas, and flamenco.

Adios!

Pompei

Pompei was not what we imagined. We were thinking of dry, dusty ruins with archaeologists all over. But Pompei really is just like a city without ceilings. The buildings, right down to frescoes on the walls, are largely intact. And it is beautiful! There was so much green there; they have made an effort to grow plants on the site that they know were there when Mount Vesuvius erupted.

Just inside the archaeological zone.

In front of the remains of an aqueduct.

This is actually mostly plaster poured into the area where a body once was.

Roma

Mom in the Imperial Forum museum. The statue fragment is from the second century BC.

Erin in front of the Coloseum.

Mom tossing a coin over her shoulder into the Trevi Fountain. This guarantees she will return to Rome someday!

We ate on the piazza right in front of the Pantheon. It is so much bigger in person than it looks here!
